Artist Spotlight
"Don’t ask me how I did, I just did it, it was hard"
Does that sound familiar to you? That line, played over a beat that really hits you, has been popping up all over social media recently. Chandler Matkins, or simply Chandler when performing, wrote that as a part of his song ‘Nothin’ To It’ and it has quickly taken over TikTok. As of April 3rd it has generated over 16 million posts.
“Don't ask me how I did it, I just did it, it was hard
I just pulled up to the studio and laid it on the line
I just shot enough fish inside a barrel 'til I hit
Now I'm sippin' on some shit you've never heard of, lookin' fine
Haha, son, I'm flyin”
Like many musicians who have the ability to go viral, TikTok is just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to the man in the 757.
Chandler has easily become one of my favorite Hip-hop artists. At a time when the lyrical content of Hip-hop is very ‘samey’, being braggadocious, tough, and trying to convince the listener that “I’m the best alive”, you have Chandler. A Hip-hop artist that I can only describe as somebody who goes against the grain, and smiles every step of the way.
With a total of 38 singles and no albums on Apple Music, you might feel like there isn’t enough to sink into. Some Hip-hop artists put out multiple albums per year. However, most of the time these albums, and this overlaps into mixtapes, have filler. Chandler is one of those lucky few artists today that doesn’t release filler, all of his songs are captivating, and it makes for a great listening experience.
No matter if you’re looking for some great production, positivity, humor, or quality writing, Chandler is one to keep an eye on. Who knows, you might just put on one of his songs and decide “It’s a vibe”. For information about his current tour as well as all of his social media I’ve linked Chandler’s shor.by below.
