Artist Spotlight

 

The MC of the southern belle, Wic Whitney fuses incredible Hip-Hop flow with the sultry R&B of the south. Wic was not an artist I would’ve ever found by chance. When I found out about him it was due to my wife. 

(Big time appreciation to her, she always seems to find some great music) 

She came across him on TikTok, and even though I have the app, I really don’t use it. When I first listened to Wic, it was on his song ‘Matcha’, his most popular song on Apple Music. I was immediately taken by his unconventional approach. First and foremost Wic sounds like positivity personified, behind a voice that sounds like it was crafted in the church choir. His music has an incredible ability to make you take a breath. Upbeat while at the same time being personal, a true storyteller with the ability to make you laugh from a Toy Story pun in ‘Hibiscus’, and the only lyricist I have heard use the word dichotomy in a verse. Wic welcomes you into his home, hands you your favorite drink, and tells you to put your feet up. 

Some of the artists I will introduce you to here will take longer to read, there are many things to explain. Some artists might be so new that there isn’t much I can say. Wic however is different in that regard. Although he isn’t a new artist, I can’t really say much else without being incredibly biased. With Wic, you just need to listen to get a nuanced understanding, and I suggest you start with his EP Afternoon Tea. Below I have linked his website as well as his song ‘Matcha’, so you can see exactly why his music gives me goosebumps.
